1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul Ausländer (Röhrig Géza) egyike a krematóriumokban dolgozó sonderkommandósoknak. Társai tudják, hogy bármelyik pillanatban kivégezhetik őket, fegyvereket gyűjtenek és lázadást szerveznek. Saul viszont az elégetésre váró holttestek között felfedezni véli saját fiát, és ettől kezdve a férfit a menekülés helyett egy másik lehetetlen küldetés élteti: elhatározza, hogy kicsempészi a testet és keres egy rabbit, hogy méltó módon eltemethesse a gyermeket.
A film 2015-ben többek között elnyerte a Cannes-i fesztivál nagydíját, a legjobb idegen nyelvű filmnek járó Golden Globe-díjat, és a legjobb idegen nyelvű filmnek járó Oscar-díjat.

Two days in the life of Saul Auslander, Hungarian prisoner working as a member of the Sonderkommando at one of the Auschwitz Crematoriums who, to bury the corpse of a boy he takes for his son, tries to carry out his impossible deed: salvage the body and find a rabbi to bury it. While the Sonderkommando is to be liquidated at any moment, Saul turns away of the living and their plans of rebellion to save the remains of a son he never took care of when he was still alive. 
At the 2015 Cannes Film Festival the film won the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize in the main competition section. Son of Saul also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Golden Globe Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film.
