Jeanne d'Arc perének és kínhalálának, ennek az irodalomban is szép pályát befutott témának számos filmfeldolgozása van. A dán rendező Carl Theodor Dreyer nagyrészt premier plánokból álló művét azonban már 1958-ban Brüsszelben klasszikussá avatták a kritikusok: 78 szavazattal a "minden idők 12 legjobb filmje" között a negyedik helyre került. A forgatókönyv az utolsó nap drámai fordulatokban bővelkedő eseményeit idézi eredeti vallomások alapján. Az eretnekként máglyahalálra ítélt törékeny lány élethalálharca a görög tragédiák szigorú egyszerűségével jelenik meg a páratlanul szuggesztív képkompozíciókon.

A classic of the silent age, Dreyer's film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for heresy, Jeanne d'Arc (Renee Falconetti) is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of catholic church court officials. Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom. The film was voted number 4 on the prestigious Brussels 12 list at the 1958 World Expo.
